Shortly before New Year's Eve we left Bolivia after about 1.5 weeks. We really really enjoyed the 3 day trip through the Salar de Uyuni. Absolutely worth a trip! Beautiful nature (salt desert, lagoons and much more) and a real adventure to discover. Overall, we weren't that impressed with Bolivia. We found the people not to be that friendly and the country itself is very poor and dirty. People are always making fun of Chile and getting upset because they have taken away important access to the sea. It has to be said that we only saw three places/regions and Bolivia has even more to offer. Similar to Peru, there is also jungle, desert and the high mountains of the Andes.
Here are a few more facts from us:
- who else knows the silent fox from school? Here in Bolivia this hand position is the Sexy Llama
- at Christmas there is Picana, a soup that actually has everything in it (three types of meat, vegetables...)
- Here too, toilet paper is not allowed in the toilet
- Since Bolivia is very high, many people chew coca leaves all day long (cocaine is made from these leaves, the leaves themselves only contain 0.4% cocaine)
- Tiwanaku is sometimes referred to as the Machu Picchu of Bolivia, but it definitely is not
We had a nice time in Bolivia, but one trip was enough for us :) the main attraction is definitely the Salar de Uyuni, which is really very impressive.
Best regards
