USA 2022 Day 2 + 3

Publié: 18.04.2022

Washington Day 2 and trip to Chincoteague

On our second day in Washington, we first went to the Pentagon. Huge building but quite unspectacular. Worth seeing is the Pentagon Memorial in memory of the 184 victims of September 11, 2001.

We entered through a side entrance to the Arlington National Cemetery.

Some quick facts:

Established in 1864, 260,000 graves, the second largest cemetery in the USA, about 5,400 burials per year.

I have to say, it is incredibly impressive. The white tombstones, the size, driving around there by car, and the fact that there are tourist tours (and Wi-Fi, in a cemetery... 🤔).

Overall, it is a very beautiful facility, especially now in the springtime. There are always colorful accents from Kwanzan cherries and other colorful trees. That makes it an experience and not sad or overwhelming at all. Of course, we also visited the grave of John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline, as well as Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her husband.

In the end, it took us 4 hours, with the best weather, in this extraordinary facility. I can recommend everyone to see it.

In the evening, we wanted to go to Georgetown on the waterfront, but somehow no bus wanted to take us there. It wasn't running. But what is a vacation with Egg without waiting for a bus. 😉

In the end, we ended up at a taco bar where we had delicious food and good cider.

On Sunday, we went to the Union Station and after some searching, we found the car rental. We headed towards the Delmarva Peninsula with our rental car. We stopped in Annapolis. Perfect for lunch, we went to the diner Chick & Ruth's Delly. I can only say: amazing. Definitely worth an experience. A little run-down, crowded, nice but consistent service,... simply quaint. Apart from that, the food was great. We decided not to treat ourselves to the milkshake with a huge cookie on top of the whipped cream, that would have been the calories of the next two days in one glass.

After eating, we took a little walk in the historic town of Annapolis and saw many interesting houses as well as the United States Naval Academy (surely known to avid NCIS viewers). Furthermore, you can find the Maryland State House in Annapolis, which was the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress (1783-84).

Very beautiful historic city, Chick & Ruth's Delly highly recommended.

We continued to Chincoteague. We drove across the Delmarva Peninsula and made a short detour to the beach on the Atlantic. I have to say, amazing landscape. Certainly unusual are the houses that are occasionally located in a field or in the woods and I wonder who lives there?!?

Our hotel in Chincoteague is very pleasant, large room, nice service, clean.

In this sense, we are now waiting for our breakfast and then we'll go to the lighthouse to see if we can spot some horses.
