Today, we set off from the campsite, which is early for our standards, at around 9:30 am and drive about 8 km to the Plitvice Lakes. The weather forecast predicts a changeable day and rain from 1 pm. That's why we make sure to get going. Equipped with rain jackets and umbrellas, we start walking to the entrance of the national park and to 'Station 1'.
From there, a small boat takes us to the other side of the first lake.
The lake is very clear and you can see a lot of fish. I vaguely remember having been here in my childhood. Marik can already see the first waterfalls from a distance. He's very excited and really wants to go 'there'. After we leave the boat, we continue on a wooden boardwalk that winds its way slowly uphill. You can see that it has rained a lot in the past few days, because the water reaches almost to the wooden boards and even partially floods the path.
We have to hold Marik's hand the whole time, because there are no handrails on either side of the path.
The boardwalk leads directly over the small waterfalls and it's scenically beautiful.
We are lucky and it's relatively quiet. That's why we can enjoy the 5 km hike. At first, Leonora is still looking interested from the carrier. But eventually she falls asleep and misses the endless number of waterfalls and small lakes. It's steadily uphill and Marik walks the entire distance with interest and without complaining. When we reach the top, we reward ourselves with a large ice cream and a sandwich and wait for the shuttle bus that takes us back to the valley. We're glad we decided to make this stop. The Plitvice Lakes are impressive and beautiful and definitely worth a visit. Despite the forecast, the weather held up perfectly and we didn't see a single drop of rain all day. However, we did get a bit wet from the waterfalls ;)
Back at the campsite, we rest and spend the afternoon relaxed at the playground, in front of the caravan, and at the pool. In the evening, we cook a large portion of pasta. Marik eats three bowls. No wonder considering the energy he burned today.
Tomorrow, we are finally heading to the coast to Sibenik, where the next natural highlight is waiting for us: the Krka Waterfalls.
