On the hunt for Pumbaa and co.

Publié: 18.08.2023

Early in the morning, we set off on our first game drive at dawn. Above the Nile, we could watch the rising sun and shortly afterwards, right by the roadside, we spotted the first reedbucks, closely followed by the first giraffes - and we were still on the well-built highway. In the next few hours, we saw numerous animals - from antelopes, kobs and warthogs to various giraffes and several herds of elephants running through the savannah. After our guide Iwan made a quick phone call, we sped off on the red, bumpy road - another guide had spotted lions nearby! To our delight, the lionesses with their young were sunning themselves at the waterhole when we arrived! Since lions are difficult to spot in tall grass, it is rare to find any here. Near the Nile, we took a breakfast break, where the curious Pumbas approached us to within 1 meter, hoping to get some of our food.

Afterwards, we headed back towards the Nile and onto the boat. Our destination was the Murchison Falls. Here, the waters of the Nile rush through a narrow gap in the rocks with rapid speed, about 8 meters wide. On the way there, we saw countless hippos and once again giraffes and elephants on the banks. We also spotted a few crocodiles.

We had our packed lunch right at the boat jetty - at least the part that a cheeky baboon, which had crept up on us from behind, didn't steal from us. What a fright it was, when you unsuspectingly look aside and suddenly find yourself face to face with a fully grown baboon, who is not deterred from his mission by a few tourists...

The last stop of the day led us on a short hike above the waterfalls. From here, we could also see the 2nd waterfall before returning to the accommodation, which we now saw for the first time in daylight. In the evening, the 'Hirnbirn' took us to the viewing platform, where we admired the African starry sky.
