Milford Sound

Publié: 15.12.2023

I didn't particularly feel like driving down a 120km long dead end road, so I chose the option of taking the bus from Queenstown to Milford Sound.

For a long time I couldn't decide: should I go to Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound. I then asked the locals here and most of them recommended Milford Sound to me.

The excursion lasts 12 hours 😮‍💨, although you are only in the sound for about 2 hours - so the rest is bus travel. If you look at the map, Queenstown isn't that far from Milford Sound, but the roads have to avoid large lakes and mountains...

When we arrived in Milford National Park, things quickly became spectacular. One lookout followed the next and the bus driver explained that several films had already been filmed on a large meadow. In addition to a large meadow, there are rivers, lakes, waterfalls, deep valleys and mountains - lots of mountains. The nature during the journey to the sound was so beautiful, but the sound seemed almost unspectacular. Luckily I had booked the afternoon tour. We were one of the last groups of the day and there wasn't that much going on.

The sound was beautiful, also with lots of mountains, waterfalls and of course more water - but the drive to the sound impressed me more.

On the way back I was very tired and the journey seemed never to end, but at some point it was done and I was back in Queenstown.
