October 20, 2021: Bamberg
F. Among other things, we have the "Western Europe" travel guide from Lonely Planet in our luggage, and there, the city of Bamberg is highly regarded as one of the most beautiful and most authentic cities in Germany among the top 10 attractions. The old town is said to have many well-preserved buildings and churches. Since Bamberg is also practically on the way to Frankfurt, where we will meet Nils and Ramona this weekend, we did not miss this stop and drove through the Thuringian Forest to visit this German cultural site.
When we arrived in Bamberg, we parked in a residential area just outside the city and walked into the city via the Milky Way. In the meantime, we were able to refresh our knowledge about the Milky Way a bit, as the city of Bamberg has lined the Milky Way with various signs about our solar system. In Bamberg City, we visited all the major and minor sights such as the cathedral, town hall, new residence, and old town. What stands out above all is the masses of foreign tourists who are sometimes guided in large groups through the city. The sentence from our travel guide "Away from the main tourist route, [...]" is probably no longer true thanks to Lonely Planet. However, one must agree with the travel guide regarding the beauty of the historical buildings, as they have been very well restored and are very beautiful to look at. It was definitely worth a visit. A special highlight for me was "Klein Venedig" (Little Venice) on the banks of the Regnitz River. These old small fishermen's houses wind their way like a little dragon along the northern bank. Many houses still have curved roof ridges, and not every house in the row is the same height. In the past, you could even sail under the houses with a boat, as the houses were built on stilts. However, for some time now, the ground floor has been converted into living space, and attempts are being made to keep the Regnitz River in check with weirs.
In the evening, we drove to Eltmann and stayed overnight there in a parking space right by the Main River.
