Aarhus - City of Smiles in Denmark

For a weekend, we headed even further north: We traveled to Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark. When we arrived on Friday evening, it was already dark, and we just looked for a spot at the marina where we could park our camper van for the night.

The next morning, we set off into the city center.

On the way, we hit a little low point as there was a heavy downpour, despite the weather forecast, leaving us drenched by the time we arrived in the city center.

However, the mood lifted again after a large coffee with a cinnamon roll in a well-heated café.

On the rooftop of the Salling department store, there is a 'Rooftop Garden' that truly lives up to its name.

In addition to a green garden, there are viewing platforms and plenty of seating.

Besides a café, there were punch stalls set up in winter, but they were still closed in the morning.

From the rooftop, there was also a lovely view over the city and the harbor.

Our route took us through the streets of the city center, which were already decorated for Christmas.

For today, we planned a visit to the open-air museum 'Den Gamle By'.

Here, not only are houses from long-ago times displayed, but also street scenes from the 1970s and 2010s.

Additionally, most buildings showcase the appropriate furnishings.

At the moment, there was also a special exhibition for Christmas.

At the marketplace, we tried traditional mulled wine with an apple fried in pig fat and wrapped in dough - an old Christmas specialty that isn't commonly eaten in this form anymore.

Understandably, as the apple snack was quite greasy.

Overall, we spent several hours in the museum and only left when it closed in the late afternoon, and it was already dark outside.

We then returned to the harbor through the illuminated city center.

On Sunday, we also went to the Moesgaard Museum, which tells about the people of prehistoric times through various exhibitions.

In small tours, one travels from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages.

We particularly enjoyed the appealing design and the many interactive and multimedia elements in the exhibition.

To conclude, we visited the special exhibition 'Warriors', which tells about the lives and sufferings of those who go to war in various cultures.

Afterward, we headed back home under bright sunshine.
