Arrival in Christchurch around noon. Many roads are still closed or under repair. In the city center, there are abandoned and uninhabited high-rise buildings. Two tall hotels are also closed. The damages are still visible in many places, even though 6 years have passed since the earthquake. Park in the Botanic Garden and stroll to the city center, to the heavily damaged cathedral. Then head to the containers: Re:START is an initiative that has allowed some of the shops that were previously in the area to move into these colorful containers. Nice cafes, small shops, everything looks inviting and charming. Also visit the transitional cathedral by architect Shigeru Ban.
Malte is exhausted, he goes to bed at 8:45 pm and falls asleep quickly. We stay overnight at Middleton Park.
