A Visit to Ayr - Part 3

Nai-publish: 25.06.2021

The 'Dumfries House'

On Sunday, the second to last day of my vacation, I had the opportunity to visit the grounds of the 'Dumfries House'. The construction of the house was completed in 1759. The house is surrounded by a plot of land totaling 810 hectares. In 2007, Prince Charles purchased the house and grounds and opened the park to the public.

Inside the house, there is a large exhibition of Chippendale furniture, which can usually be visited. Chippendale furniture is named after Thomas Chippendale, a master cabinetmaker who published his first catalog of furniture in 1754. At that time, the pieces were bought by the wealthier English society and still hold incredible value today.

Directly across from the house stands this beautiful fountain. It was built by William Pye and at the very top, you can see the thistle flower, which is considered a Scottish symbol.

What's special about the grounds is that you can find different styles from different countries. This is mainly due to sponsors from all over the world supporting Prince Charles' plans. Behind this bridge, you can see a small Greek temple. However, it is not made of stone, but of wood.

Of course, there are also options for refreshments. In a small café, you can buy a variety of dishes. Like this little tart, a 'Banaofee' with caramel and banana. Very delicious!

In the back part of the park, you can find beautiful, extensive gardens with a variety of flowers. I have included a few specimens here.

The very last part of the park leads to a large fruit and vegetable garden. In addition to many herbs, lettuce, and vegetables, there are also various types of fruit. Blackberries, raspberries, currants, apple and pear trees, and much more.

Those who know me well know that I particularly liked this little greenhouse. Many different houseplants that I would love to have in my own room.

completed puzzle

On the last evening, we finally finished the puzzle. In total, 299 cats and 1 dog found their place.

Just before my departure, we took a long walk on the beach. One last time to breathe in the sea air, feel the wind blowing through our hair, listen to the sound of the waves, feel the sand under our feet, and enjoy the beautiful landscape of Scotland. Even though it was a short vacation, it did me incredibly well, and I hope I can come back again someday.
