It belongs to the comarca of Vallès Occidental (joint capital towns: Sabadell and Terrassa) and to the judicial district of Rubí, the judicial district number 24 of the province of Barcelona. Today, it is one of the wealthiest municipalities in all of Spain, with several millionaires and large businesspeople residing here; however, it is the seventh richest city in terms of GDP or average gross income in the entire country, surpassed only by the municipality (in the same comarca) of Matadepera.

The beautiful monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès (which houses its equally beautiful parish church of Sant Pere (Saint Peter) d'Octavià) was built between the 9th and 14th centuries and features Romanesque and Gothic styles. It was the most important monastery in the entire county of Barcelona.
