Day 4 - New York

Nai-publish: 31.08.2016

Our first stop of the day was the USS Intrepid Air & Space Museum. It is located on the banks of the Hudson River on the west side of Manhattan and features the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, converted into a museum ship. There was plenty to see on the aircraft carrier, showcasing the aviation advancements of the past decades. Various fighter jets, helicopters, a Concorde, and even NASA's first space shuttle, the Enterprise!

The space shuttle was named in honor of the cult TV series Star Trek. And as a big Trekkie, I was particularly thrilled that the museum was hosting a Star Trek exhibition. 😊

We then took a bus to the east side of Manhattan, where we left the USA for a little over an hour. Since 1950, the headquarters of the United Nations has been located on the banks of the East River. The land on which the complex was built does not belong to the territory of the USA. During an exciting guided tour, we learned more about the various tasks of the UN and its subsidiary organizations.

We strolled along the beautiful 1st Avenue towards uptown to take a special tram ride. It's not a tram like we know it, but a gondola that takes New Yorkers from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island, a small island in the East River. From the gondola, you have a great view of the skyscrapers and chaotic streets of New York.

To end the day, we went to East Village, a picturesque artist quarter of Manhattan. In the evening hours, the streets of the neighborhood filled with lively characters, and the many bars, restaurants, and street cafes had a festive atmosphere. But East Village is also home to the world-famous show 'Stomp,' which we watched today. The show is simply WOW! If the show ever comes back to Switzerland, we highly recommend it!
