Day 103-104 Karratha

We started our days in Karratha with a visit to the well stocked Karratha Visitor Information Center: they had many booklets about all the places from Karratha & surroundings to Karijini, Exmouth, Shark Bay, Turquoise Coast, Wildflowers, Mt Augustus all the way to the Perth area. Stuart was quite impressed about all the reading we wanted to do in the next days but insisted on restocking on food, especially bananas, gelato, chocolate in all sorts and pancakes to have enough energy for reading...

In Karratha there is the Yaburara Heritage Trail, a walking track advertised with lots of natural history and cultural heritage points of interest. We started early in the morning to complete the whole trail consisting of four different sections. Stuart joined us for the first section, the Waterfall Trail to the Aboriginal Quarry and Petroglyph Site and the Aboriginal Shell Midden. Well, Stuart was pretty disappointed as there were noch petroglyphs to spot anywhere and the Shell Midden was just some area with lots of shells, but nothing special. There was no waterfall either despite the name Waterfall Trail.

Stuart decided to enjoy the view on the wildflowers, while we walked to the other sections of the trail: we went on to the Rotary Trail. On the map provided, there was a Aboriginal Artefact Scatter, an Aboriginal Talu Site, Aboriginal Engravings as well as Aboriginal Grinding Stones as sights marked. We couldn´t find any of it on the trail... The only point of interest we could identify was the Rotary Lookout providing views over Karratha, which was ok, but definitely not worth the walk up the hill over rocks & stones in the bright sun. Nevertheless, we walked another part off the Trail, the Point to Point Trail with the Survey Trig Point and the Double View Point. No idea, where the first one was, the second one was clearly marked with the footprints and the statue, providing again just a view of Karratha town. So on the way back scrambling over rocks in the upcoming heat of the day, we decided to skip the fourth and last part of the trail as the 'points of interest' weren´t interesting at all, but the walk would be again a scramble over rocks up and down the hills...
