Moulin de St. Pierre, Gordes and Saignon

Julkaistu: 06.10.2024

Fortunately, the Mistral has calmed down today and it is pleasantly warm. The Mistral is a cold, dry, and strong northwesterly wind that blows especially in southern France (in the Provence region) and along the Rhône Valley. This wind mainly occurs in winter and spring and can greatly influence the weather.

Characterized by its strength and long duration, which can often last several days, the Mistral is known for bringing clear skies and sunny weather as it drives away clouds. At the same time, the Mistral can also be unpleasant, as it is very gusty and cool, especially in winter. Its name derives from the Latin word “magistralis,” meaning “masterful” or “dominant,” indicating its strong and dominant nature.

On our way to Gordes, we happened to discover the Moulin de St. Pierre. The long history of the mill Saint Pierre is closely linked to that of the village of Les Taillades. The functionality of the mill changed several times over the years until operations ceased in the seventies. The mill features a wheel with a diameter of 8 meters and 24 blades that rotate under the influence of the water from the canal. Even though its function today is merely to grind the passing time, it remains a symbol of the village's industrial past.

After the stop, we continued our journey. After the last turns of a pretty road with dry stone walls, Gordes appears, the high village that is one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France.’

Gordes

It is located in the Vaucluse department and is known for its picturesque position on a hill amidst the Luberon Regional Natural Park. Gordes is characterized by narrow, winding streets, charming stone houses, and breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and vineyards.

Breathtaking View

The village is rich in history and culture. At the center of Gordes stands an imposing castle (Château de Gordes), built in the 11th century and later remodeled during the Renaissance. It now hosts a museum and changing art exhibits.

Chateau de Gordes

Gordes has always attracted artists and intellectuals. Famous personalities like the painter Marc Chagall have lived here. The unique landscape and the authentic atmosphere of the village have inspired many, including the residents.
