Flight over the Nazca Lines

Argitaratu: 13.05.2018

Halfway between Arequipa and Lima are the world-famous Nazca Lines. But what are these lines? They are over 1,500 huge ground drawings that are carved into the desert floor in Nazca, Peru. The lines and images cover an area of around 500 square kilometers and are considered the most impressive remains of pre-Christian times. There are numerous theories about when and for what purpose the geoglyphs were created, but researchers still do not agree.

I certainly didn't want to miss this special place, so I made my way to the small village of Nazca. The images and lines can only be seen from above, and the sightseeing flights are known for their numerous and exciting turns. So on this morning, I replaced my breakfast with a motion sickness tablet and headed to the airport.

After determining the proper weight distribution for the small plane, the four of us boarded the plane. The co-pilot explains the lines we will fly over, and off we go!

The pilot makes wild turns as we fly over the figures, allowing us to see the lines from both sides of the plane. I am so fascinated that I almost forget to feel motion sick. After 30 minutes, the fun is over and my stomach is quite happy to be back on the ground.
