Day 12 - Piran - a city to fall in love with

Argitaratu: 15.07.2018

Yesterday I already noticed the leafing through the travel guides. If someone rummages in my side door, I know that it won't be long before we continue. But it wasn't time yet, it was just a day trip - in full sunshine and temperatures of 33 degrees and more.

Day 12 - Slovenian coastal town of Piran -

After a jog at still 24 degrees and a brewed coffee with muesli, I set off for Piran at 10:30 a.m. My navigation system (yes, I have one installed and I'm happy about it) showed that it should only be 25km away. Let's wait and see - but the route there was brilliant. I drove through curves and mountains, but the road conditions were partly terrible. My poor shock absorbers really had to work today.

On a mountain on the way there - spontaneous braking, stopping and enjoying a view - together with a couple from Germany (LA) who were studying their map like crazy. Their bus also looked older.

Drinking fresh water and splashing it on my face for a moment, I continued on to Piran. After a short detour to Portoroz, I finally ended up in an insanely narrow parking garage that could be driven from top to bottom (probably due to the mountain). Here I had to wait because Piran is only accessible for residents - tourists have to leave their cars outside and take free buses to the city.

I've been told that Piran is beautiful. A small town with Italian flair, nice people and many small streets. Visiting the St. George Church (whose bones are said to be on display), the baptistery (amazing panoramic view of the city), the city walls (the most beautiful by far) and the Tartinijev trg (central market square) were worth it. A wonderful, small - easily walkable - city. Right by the sea with a great harbor and many white sailboats. Many people just jump into the sea and then walk through the city with partially wet clothes. Of course, fresh fish cannot be missed in the restaurant - great value for money!

The city was not crowded at all, so there was plenty of time for everything. Strolling through the small shops where locals offer their handicrafts, or fresh fruits and vegetables - Piran is beautiful! 413 photos - crazy -

If desired, you could also return to the parking garage by swimming (the sea is crystal clear and wonderful). In this case - do without the bus - because the way back is easily walkable - only the cold water at the bar was too expensive at 1.80€.

I'm allowed to drive again - it's already 4 p.m. and the heat outside is oppressive. For 8.50€ I was allowed to park in the parking garage and then struggle more or less to get out in the narrow curves of the building.

Heading out of town on coastal roads towards Ankaran with a stop at the supermarket. Domestic wine (Rebula grape) and salad were bought and the inside of my car smelled of fresh melon. When I started the engine - ttaattaaaaaaa - 40,002km - since 8,500km I have been in its possession and we are very happy together - a few thousand kilometers are sure to come!

Arriving at my spot, I am once again next to my PalmaEasyAir and make myself comfortable in the heat.

There's not much happening - Belgium wins against England and in the evening I hear Irish folk music from the adjacent restaurant, lots of children's laughter and splashing water - everything as usual! Nice - I'll stay here for two more nights, then it's off to the exciting Soča Valley (so I've heard).
