2nd day in Hue, Vietnam

Avaldatud: 31.01.2020

On my second day in Hue, I planned to explore the other side of the city. Before crossing the river, I noticed many boats with dragon heads at the front, which are famous for the city. The river is called the 'Perfume River' and is said to have crystal clear blue water and smell like perfume, but I perceived it differently ;)

Upon arriving on the other side of the river, there was a local market. Again, I noticed mostly locals buying food. Tourists, like myself, were just looking and not buying anything. It is also worth mentioning that the locals ride their scooters everywhere, even through the smallest alleyways in the market, causing traffic jams and the exhaust fumes to settle on the food...

One of the landmarks of the city was also on the agenda for this day: the Citadel of Hue. The former residence of the Vietnamese emperor was built in 1804 following the model of a forbidden Chinese city. A 10km long stone wall is surrounded by a 20m wide moat. The emperor and the entire family lived in the over 100 rooms until 1968, when the US military deliberately bombed the residence. Since 1993, the Citadel of Hue has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
