Photo statistics: Where are the most photos taken while traveling?

How many photos end up in a travel report? That depends primarily on where it's written. We analyzed the average number of photos per report by country—and the difference is significant: A report from Vietnam contains more than twice as many pictures as a report from Germany or Switzerland.

Long-distance travel means: twice as many photos

The pattern is clear: The top group consists almost entirely of long-haul destinations. Vietnam, Peru, and Argentina lead with around 23 photos per report, followed by Japan, South Africa, and Canada. At the bottom are the home region and neighboring countries—a report on Germany or Switzerland averages less than half that number of images.

The explanation lies in the psychology of the unusual: what is unfamiliar gets photographed. The street market in Hanoi, the Andean serpentine road, the temple in Kyoto—everything new, everything worthy of a picture. The hiking trail right outside your door, on the other hand, is familiar; here, the text carries the narrative, not the photograph. Portugal is interesting as the only European destination in the top group: azulejos (tiles), the Atlantic coast, and Lisbon's narrow streets apparently make it, photographically speaking, a long-distance trip in miniature.

Data source: all publicly available travel reports on Vakantio with assigned country (as of August 2026). The average number of photos per report per country is shown; countries with too few reports are excluded. All figures are averages per report, not absolute numbers.
