Day 20, from Demir Kapija to Strumica

Today we had a nice breakfast before we set off. Our hike today was 26 Km long. First through a gorge - then along the river and the railway track until we arrived at the village of Udovo. During the hike next to the railway tracks, we encountered 2 smaller groups of refugees walking along the tracks, with the goal of reaching Serbia. They greeted us kindly and asked about bread, the next train station, and shopping opportunities. We didn't have any bread with us since we always eat the fruits along the roadside during the hike. In the village of Udovo, we waited at a gas station for the next bus to Strumica, as the road there is a busy main road. We then took the bus for 35 Km for 1.63 €, and then took a taxi for 2 km for 3.20 € to the accommodation. After that, we walked to the center for food and coffee.

During the day, we ate grapes and figs again.

(Willi) Today, I remembered the experience with the farmer in Meiden when we begged him for food. I realize that the topic of refugees is a broad one. Compassion and empathy should always be dominant.

When we returned to the apartment, Günter realized that his pants had flown 5m lower into the gutter. He made a fishing rod out of a hanger and tent ropes and retrieved them.
