MALACCA

Published: 13.08.2024

We reached Malacca with a 3-hour journey from Kuala Lumpur. Malacca is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cultures of Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian, and Japanese have blended with 500 years of Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences in this city. Before the Portuguese captured Malacca in the 16th century, the Malacca Sultanate was the dominant kingdom in the region. After approximately 100 years of Portuguese rule, the Dutch seized the city with the help of Malays. About 150 years later, the British took Malacca from the Dutch without a fight. Thus, an undeniable European architecture and culture emerged in Malacca. Another unique culture of Malacca is the Babavonya culture, which formed from the marriages between Chinese men and Malay women. It's possible to taste the exquisite dishes of Babavonya cuisine in the restaurants at the corners 🥰.

Jonker Street is the center of the Chinatown in Malacca. Jonker Walk was one of the most beautiful streets I've seen so far. A night market is held twice a week on the street lined with restaurants and colorful shops on both sides.

Christ Church Melaka is one of the most iconic structures remaining from the Dutch colonial period in Malacca. The church, which was white when built, was painted red in the early 1900s, and this color has become indicative of many buildings from the Dutch era. The interior of the church is filled with numerous gravestones inscribed in Dutch, English, Portuguese, and Armenian.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is a restored Chinese temple from the 1640s, reflecting traditional architecture with intricate wood carvings.

Kampung Kling Mosque is a wooden mosque built by Indian traders in 1748, renovated in 1872. Its roof, reminiscent of Chinese temples and its minaret, resembling a pagoda, creates an unusual visual.

We stayed at the Thian Siong Inn hotel. You will definitely be satisfied. It is a very nice hotel in the center.
