Even more millionaire

Published: 02.03.2019

After the Laotian Kip (LAK) has already challenged us with large numbers, the Vietnamese Dong increases the requirements for us even further.

One Dong is currently €0.000038 or vice versa 26,395.30 VND is one Euro. This means activating and training our long-lost mental arithmetic skills (and at our age...), as well as demanding visual perception to recognize how many zeros (three, four or five) follow the respective digit.

We have only received Dong notes so far. There are apparently no coins. The production cost would also be much higher than the face value.

The following notes are available:

1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 VND

2,000, 20,000 and 200,000 VND

5,000, 50,000 and 500,000 VND

... and you can hardly believe it, also a note with the value of 500 VND, which is less than 2 Euro cents (€0.02).

In general, the maximum withdrawal limit at banks, which charge acceptable fees (<1.8%), is 3,000,000 VND (around €115). That's why we use ATMs more frequently in Vietnam.

For tours or tickets, we have seen price tags in dollars only at travel agencies and dive centers (on Phu Quoc). Cambodia seems to be an exception with its unofficial dual currency.
