Explore and accommodation in San Jose del Pacifico

Published: 21.01.2024

Good morning,

The last few days went a little differently than planned because I was forced to stay in Oaxaca a little longer. I probably caught something during my visit to Roma Norte. I suspect the soup I had for breakfast...

I would now like to talk about a trip to other ruins or other things, but unfortunately I haven't been able to do anything like that. After a video call with a doctor, I received confirmation of minor poisoning. I was then prescribed antibiotics and other stuff and then booked a single room for the next 2 days. Not much happened during that time; I was in bed, on the terrace or in the city center looking for something easy to digest. The day before yesterday (01/18/24) it was time for the first load of laundry (huu very exciting, I know😂). On January 19, 2024 I was at the hairdresser...he chatted so much with his colleague that he didn't even get to cut😑. But I felt a little better that day and decided to leave tomorrow. Towards the afternoon I really wanted some ice cream. However, before I could take a photo, I had almost finished it because it was so delicious😄. For dinner we had spaghetti with avocado (sauce)... I found an interesting recipe, but didn't want to buy all the ingredients and then it ended up being spaghetti with avocado and lime. With cream, spices and other ingredients it would certainly have been a culinary delight but what the heck😂.

Today (01/20/24) I set off after a cold shower (hot water is a thing here...), a small breakfast and with a full backpack. The bus station for the Colectivos was just 5 minutes from my accommodation. These are, for example, converted sprinters that can transport up to 18 people. Yesterday I was told that they run every 30 minutes to San José del Pacífico, so I got there shortly after 9 a.m. to calmly get a ticket for 9:30. Less than 2 minutes later I was sitting on the 9 a.m. bus without a ticket and we set off. The gentleman at the ticket counter literally put me on the bus, even though I had actually wanted to take the next bus in a relaxed manner. Well, at least I was on the right bus, everything else is sorted out. It happened, we stopped somewhere on a gravel road in a small village, a woman from the bus company got on, collected the money for the trip and disappeared again. It's better not to question the concept because I didn't get a receipt or anything...

After 3 hours the journey was over and I was glad that I only had a small breakfast. The last 36 km went up 1000m, with countless curves.

San José del Pacifico is a small village in the middle of the mountain, very quiet and a good place to relax. The place has become famous for magic mushrooms, which grow in the forests here in summer/autumn. Due to the altitude of 2500m it is often foggy as the clouds hang in the mountains. Another highlight here are the Temazcal ceremonies, which are small clay huts that are heated with hot stones and are said to be a particularly healing experience due to the herbs used. I would like to have this experience tomorrow. You can also go hiking here wonderfully.

During the day I wandered through the village and found a restaurant where you could easily watch the sunset. I went there in the evening, ate something and later ordered some cocoa. It's much colder here, so I needed my jacket for the first time since I left. Back in the hostel room I talked to 3 friends who come from Mexico City and are now on a little party vacation. Very cool people, although the language barrier hindered our conversation a bit😂
