Crossing....
From Puerto Penasco we drive through the godforsaken Pinacate y Gran Desierto del Pinacar. Sand dunes, scrub, and nothing else. Traffic practically non-existent, but there are...

From San Felipe we take the Mex5. Worried Americans have warned us that the road is partially damaged due to bad weather. This means that practically all the parts that cross a stream have been washed away on the asphalted part. And there are quite a few of them. In addition, the warners evidently forgot that the southern part of the "motorway" is still under construction and all the diversions lead through the steppe and are numerous. Signage is rather lacking.
Nevertheless, in the end no problem and we return to civilization where we first restock our supplies and plan the further route.
Since there is practically nothing interesting along this part of the Mex1, we take the long way to Guerrero Negro. Along mountains and wide valleys with countless cacti, the two-lane road is of decent quality. The encounters with the trucks that show how narrow the road is are always exciting.
In Guerrero Negro we want to stay by the sea, but we encounter a guarded gate of a salt pan. We skip the alternative route because we meet two American couples with campers who recommend going to the city, as there are a few unfriendly dogs at the camping area.
We follow the Americans and settle in at the downtown campsite. Actually not our thing at all. But here we meet Steff and Kathrin, a Swiss couple traveling from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego with their all-wheel drive camper van. We immediately hit it off and spend the evening in the Defender with wine and beer.
