Chang Mai is the biggest city in Northern Thailand and has a population of 130,000 people. It was founded in 1296. In the old city, you can still see remnants of the city walls and moats from when Chiang Mai was a religious and cultural center. The old city is laid out in a rectangular shape and is surrounded on all four sides by a water-filled moat.
You enter the old city through different gates. My hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Chiang Mai Gate. Chiang Mai is famous for its Night Market, but every Sunday, a special night market takes place. The main streets of the city are turned into pedestrian streets and closed to traffic, and there is a huge market.
Before I visit this market, I enjoy some delicious street food at the small evening food market right at Chiang Mai Gate. I eat my favorite food, vegetarian Pad Thai, a dish made with typical Thai noodles.
Then I head to the Sunday Night Market. The whole street is a market, and there is music everywhere. There are also dancers and singers performing. At the night market, you can buy practically everything - from food to clothes, bags, souvenirs.... I eat small things several times, even sweets. The smell is wonderful everywhere, and the food is so delicious. It's just too tempting for me to resist.
In addition to food, the drinks are extraordinarily delicious. You can get fresh fruit juices and smoothies everywhere. My favorite so far is the coconut smoothie, and I have at least one every day.
Although I can't convey the smells and tastes over the internet, I hope you can get a little "taste" of the atmosphere when you look at my pictures!
