Four Days in Guatemala

Published: 14.12.2024

Last night we flew from San Jose to Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala. Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America with 17.2 million inhabitants. Of these, 1.2 million live in the capital. The country has one of the highest crime rates in Latin America. Initially, I was a bit skeptical as it is often suggested not to carry valuables and to avoid certain areas (referred to as zones in Guatemala City). Honestly, I felt safer here than in Nicaragua. The advice to avoid certain places also applies to major cities in Europe, and one is not safe from theft or the like there either!!! The people here are very friendly and helpful. In the markets, when browsing, you are not rudely harassed if you do not make a purchase.

Today, we took the local bus in the city, also called the Metrobus. At the stops, you buy a ticket for one direction, which does not even cost 12 cents when converted. At one boarding point, we asked an employee where we could buy a ticket since we could not find a machine. Once she realized that we did not speak Spanish well and she spoke no English, she simply let us get on the bus without us having paid.
