Starlight Express and involuntary stay in Bochum

Published: 03.04.2024

To start our vacation in Germany, we planned a stop in Bochum, where we visited the musical Starlight Express.

Starlight Express

On the way we made a stop for a hike to the Schmittenhöhe to stretch our legs a bit.

Walk Schmittenhöhe

The path led us through the forest, but also had some climbs that we had to overcome for our northern German legs.

On the way to Bochum we noticed that our lane was distorted after a small collision in Hamburg.

We decided to enjoy the musical that evening and then try to make an appointment at the workshop the next day.

We sat at the very bottom on rotating chairs and saw the actors racing past us on roller skates.

After a lovely evening, the next day did not go quite as planned: We only got an appointment at the workshop in the afternoon, so we still had time in Bochum until then.

German Mining Museum Bochum

We decided to visit the German Mining Museum, which has been completely redesigned since our last visit there 15 years ago.

Only the show mine remained unchanged. Since it was school holidays, it was open all day for independent tours.

We were particularly impressed by the large machines and how they had been brought underground...

The exhibition provided a lot of information about the history of mining.

Information was also provided about renewable energies and other raw materials. I particularly liked the interactive raw materials laboratory, where you could digitally discover which raw materials are necessary for the production of everyday objects.

Afterwards we strolled a bit through the city center, which didn't have all that much to offer.

Bochum Town Hall

We found a traffic light near the pedestrian zone that looked like a clock remarkable.

Then we were finally able to drive to our appointment at the workshop. Unfortunately, we found out that the damage to the motorhome was more serious than we thought and that we should head home.

German Avenue Road

So we canceled the planned vacation and slowly made our way home, but decided to at least make a few stops along the way.

German Avenue Road

So our journey did not take us on the motorway, but along the German Avenue Road to Wiehagen.

Walk Wiehagen

In the small town we stayed overnight at the Landvergnügen host Fischhof Baumüller.

In the evening we took a walk through the town.

Wiehagen village square

There is a "bench path" there: large benches have been set up at various locations, inviting you to linger.

Wiehagen Bench Trail

There is a QR code on each bench that allows you to listen to an audio file with information about the history of the place.

So we enjoyed the beautiful weather in the evening with a bit of information before returning to the motorhome and the delicious fish we had bought in the farm shop.
