Medina of Fes (Studiosus Travel Highlights of Morocco)

After an overnight stay in Fes, today we headed to the old town.

First, however, we made a stop at a pottery workshop where Tajines are made. These are clay pots with lids in which traditional dishes are prepared.

Moreover, mosaics for walls, floors, or other decorations are also made there.

In this process, the pieces are first cut to size, assembled face down, and then poured with cement.

In the old town, we wandered behind our tour guide, without whom we surely would have gotten lost in the maze of streets.

The various crafts were located in different alleys.

On the way, we saw many shops selling yarns, fabrics, leather goods, or cauldrons, as well as wedding supplies.

We also visited a former university, where small study rooms for students were located above the courtyard where classes took place.

In the mosques of the old town, we were only allowed to look in from the outside, as visiting is prohibited for non-Muslims.

We could only view the mausoleum of the founder of the city from the outside as well.

At the end, we visited the tanners who work in the backyards of the old town.

We looked down at the vats from a viewing terrace and were grateful for the distance because of the unpleasant odor.

The men dip animal skins into the large vats, climbing in with them, as do the dyers, whose vats were located right next to them.

In the afternoon, we had free time and wanted to walk down the grand boulevard of the city. Unfortunately, it started raining so heavily that we were soaked by the time we found refuge in a modern mall. After browsing through a few shops and having a coffee there, we returned to the hotel to dry our things.

In the evening, we went to dinner at a nearby guest house that is located in a richly decorated residential building.

There, we met three young Moroccan students who shared stories about their lives in small groups and answered questions. Subsequently, we enjoyed delicious Moroccan food with explanations from the host Jalil.
