On the way to the south (Germany tour part 1)

Published: 15.07.2018

Before we embark on our multi-month journey, we are taking a small tour through Germany in the summer. We have to apply for a visa for Indonesia in Hamburg and therefore make a stopover there on our way to the south.

The visa is quickly applied for and now we hope that the mail will reliably deliver it to us.

Since we still have some time, we take the subway to the city center to take the first "historical city tour" from Scoutix. We follow clues to a fictional narrative of a Hamburg bishop and explore part of the old town in an entertaining way.

The tour ended at Jungfernstieg and we went towards Gänsemarkt to get something there when we were approached by a woman who asked if we wanted to participate in a market research survey. At first we were a bit skeptical that we were only being lured into a sales conversation. But eventually we agreed and were actually allowed to taste chocolate and philosophize about its taste and consistency. :) As a thank-you, we also received a whole bar to take away.

We stayed overnight with friends in Hanover before we went on to the picturesque town of Mettingen, which is known for its "Tüötten". We had never heard of that before and found the term rather strange ... So we went for a walk through Mettingen, passing by the Tüötten Museum. So now we know that Tüötten were wandering merchants.

In the evening we drove from there to Tecklenburg, which was the real reason for our stay in Mettingen. There we saw an open-air performance of the musical "Les Misérables".

On the way to our hotel in Raunheim, we made a stopover in Gießen to visit the Mathematikum there. In an exhibition spread over three floors, you could discover various mathematical relationships through experiments.

Then we were in Gießen's city center to eat something and watched the first half of the World Cup final. We didn't see the end of the game because one of us didn't feel like it anymore and it was too hot in the sun ... (Guess who that was).
