Today, for a change, we took a bus and boat. We booked a day trip through Doubtful Sound - the less touristy of the fjords - and we were not disappointed. The weather was stormy (wind strength up to 70km/h) and a bit wet, but as our guide says: these amazing liquid sunbeams are part of the experience here. Otherwise, you wouldn't see all the waterfalls (:
Despite (or maybe because of) the weather, the sound was incredibly impressive. Hard to describe. You drive through this untouched landscape, raw, majestic, it was breathtakingly beautiful! It's no wonder the Maori call it 'shadowland'.
On the same day, we continued to the deep south of the South Island.
