That was a good decision to book two nights and spend a whole day in Gomel. Very beautiful city, many old buildings, well maintained, much more charming than Minsk.
Minsk was completely destroyed in World War II, the city has practically no historical center (there is still a very small old block of houses) and therefore appears somewhat 'soulless' today. Gomel is completely different.
Minsk is the capital and has about 2 million inhabitants, Gomel is the second largest city in Belarus with about 500,000 inhabitants.
In Gomel, you must visit the park on the Sosch river, the cathedral, the pleasure castle and the amusement park. In addition, the 'war museum' is worth a visit. There are many exhibits from the German occupation period, including some German-language documents.
