Malta is a group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and the coast of North Africa. The country is known for its historical sites, which bear witness to the successive conquests by the Romans, Moors, the Order of St. John, French and British. Malta is home to numerous fortresses, megalithic temples, and the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni, an underground complex of halls and burial chambers dating back to around 4000 BC.
