Ice floes in the Baltic Sea

Published: 19.01.2024

The route we cover to Tallin today is not long, but quite exciting due to the snow and slippery roads. The ferry crossing to Helsinki is even more exciting. At first the sea is still open and ice-free, but soon more and more ice floes appear until you have the feeling that the ship is completely surrounded by ice floes.

There is also a closed ice cover near Helsinki. At least now we have the feeling that we are in the far north. This feeling becomes even stronger as you drive through Helsinki. Continuous snow roads, huge piles of snow on the side of the road and every small incline becomes a challenge. The Finns take the whole thing calmly and race through the streets in their mostly very large cars like Kimi Räikönnen. The guide says: Be particularly careful in traffic in Finland - almost every Finn thinks of himself as a rally driver.

The campsite in Helsinki is well attended - but there are almost only Finnish motorhomes here. Tonight the forecast is -16°. It is now 6 p.m. and -12°. The cold is very dry and the snow crunches when you walk to the shower building wearing slippers and a bathrobe 🥶.

Tomorrow we want to leave our motorhome at the campsite, dress warmly, take the subway into the city and see some of the sights.
