Up and down

Published: 07.04.2024

As in our last holidays, we are experiencing an up and down of emotions and moods, primarily my responsibility... and perhaps Michel's too.
After we had a really nice day yesterday, today was mixed again.
As already mentioned, Michel is currently sleeping extremely badly, which is not something we are used to from him.

Since we didn't know what to do at 3 a.m., Sven put Michel in the carrier and walked through Palma.
I hope, no, I pray that it really is just a “sleep regression” and that Michel - and of course we too - will soon have restful nights again.

Valledemosse is a mountain village 30 km west of Palma and is really picturesque. After a half hour drive, which Michel only endures by constantly distracting him, we shouldered the backpack, child and rucksack and set off on the first real hike of the holiday. 2 ½ hours later we returned to the starting point and in the meantime had been able to enjoy beautiful views of Palma and the island's nature. Meanwhile, Michel fell asleep in the backpack and did not let himself be woken up by the descent.
Here's a tip for anyone who is using a carrier for the first time: buy a neck pillow to go with it! From now on, we will avoid him falling asleep while he is out and about, as we don't have anything with us to adequately stabilize his neck and throat while he sleeps.
This vacation was intended as a test run to determine what and whether we were still missing equipment, since we are going to the mountains (finally again) next month.

It was hot and sunny yesterday, so I wanted to cool off in the pool with Michel while Sven went for a quick run on the beach. In my (and his) defense: I carried the backpack the entire way and had no desire for any physical exercise.

Sven had planned a coastal hike for today, but since Michel had to catch up on sleep, we didn't get going until 1 p.m. and we were once again struggling with when and how Michel should sleep again.
We started off motivated, but unfortunately after only 25 minutes Michel was no longer happy with the whole situation. We soon turned around and as it turned out, he was tired and fell asleep in the last few meters in front of the car. Unfortunately we didn't manage to maneuver him into the car while he was asleep, which stressed me out again.
Apart from a quick visit to the beach and dinner at Burger King (yes, you read that right! Unfortunately, we missed the fact that it was Sunday and didn't do any shopping), there wasn't much left on the to-do list.
Sven and I spent the whole day discussing Michel's sleeping habits, only to conclude that we have no idea what we can do better or worse.
I still believe that it is a phase. Nevertheless, it is very stressful.
At the same time, we ask ourselves again whether we are demanding too much from Michel.
We spent a long time thinking about what our next trip should look like and agreed that a flight to Mallorca would be the most relaxing option for everyone.
Of course it's easier to stay at home, especially with a baby. But it's also less exciting. And as a family, you spend time together very differently when you're traveling.
