The journey begins! The trip

Hello!

My name is David. My family and friends will surely know who I am, but just in case there are people following the blog who don't know me, here is a brief overview of who I am and what I do:

I am 27 years old and a trainee at the Regional Court of Darmstadt. As part of my legal training, I am going to Mexico City – also known as Ciudad de México (CDMX). I applied to the Federal Foreign Office to take advantage of the unique opportunity to work at a German embassy abroad, like many of my friends.

Mexico was not an arbitrary choice for me: as a big fan of Spanish-speaking culture, I completed an Erasmus semester at the University of Zaragoza in 2019. This allowed me to get to know Spanish culture more closely for a few months and to establish international contacts and friendships. Accordingly, it seemed logical to indicate Latin American countries as my preferred choice in the application. When I received the acceptance for Mexico, I was correspondingly thrilled.

Even though one might initially associate Mexico with the “guerra contra las drogas” (War on Drugs) due to its shared border with the USA, Mexico is so much more than what series like 'Narcos' convey.

Mexico is an absolutely unique country, not only the land of tacos and tequilas (which isn’t bad either 😉), but also the land of Aztec temples and pyramids, and an incredibly diverse flora and fauna.

Politically, Mexico's relationships with the USA and the EU are particularly interesting. It will also be exciting to see how Mexico develops under the newly elected president Claudia Sheinbaum from the social-democratic party Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (MoReNa) in October 2024.

Apart from gaining insight into the diplomatic work at the German embassy in Mexico City, I particularly hope to extensively get to know the country, the culture, the sights, and of course the food over the next 4 months.

With great anticipation, but also a dose of respect, I headed to the airport in Frankfurt on Friday morning. After saying goodbye to my family and girlfriend, I boarded the large Boeing airplane of Lufthansa.

With this blog, I want to document my exciting journey and try to share the exciting experiences with you.
