Frasassi Caves

After a wonderful breakfast on the sunny terrace, we went to the market in Arcevia with the homeowner.


Our house has a large apartment (currently occupied by the owner) and a small apartment, which we live in. But everything is designed in a way that you can't see or disturb each other.

So, off to the market in Arcevia. We drove on small roads in VERY hilly terrain. And it's not just hilly, the hills are also really high:


When we arrived in Arcevia, we first learned that the market doesn't mean what we understand by market. Here, you can find clothes, kitchen appliances, household items... but no fruits or vegetables. For that, there are the small vendors in the square. So, we went to the butcher, fruit vendor, cheese shop, and mini supermarket to buy everything on our list.


Then we went back to the car... groaning... and explored the area a bit. Our landlord recommended driving towards Fabbiano and visiting the caves. So, we drove, going up and down countless hills with what felt like a thousand hairpin turns. Tip: there are no road signs warning about turns here, all the curves are highly dangerous!

The area became more mountainous and our excitement grew.


A truly huge parking lot gave us an idea that this must be a large cave... but there wasn't much going on at the moment. We had an hour left until the bus would pick us up, so we passed the time with a delicious snack: thin, crispy piadina with salami/pecorino and rolled ham with herbs... you can't eat badly here, even at a snack stand the food tastes excellent!

Eventually, the bus took us to the entrance of the cave.

Of course, we are familiar with both stalactite and stalagmite caves and were prepared for something normal. However, the dimensions in the different halls of the cave impressed us greatly. "The Milan Cathedral would fit in here easily," explained our Italian guide, and we immediately believed her!

Well, it was a bit chilly in the cave, so we were happy to be back in the warm autumn air.

In the evening, we cooked a delicious meal: greens with potatoes and oven-baked fish with lemon and dill... very tasty!
