The Antarctic Triangle

(Way too) long there has been nothing to report, but now another journey is approaching: We are giving Antarctica an upgrade from 'once in a lifetime' to 'twice in a lifetime.' Two years ago, we were absolutely thrilled by our trip from Tierra del Fuego across the Ross Sea to New Zealand. We gathered so many unforgettable impressions... and yet there was/is a BUT: On this route, we did not pass by South Georgia, because it lies to the east, while the trip went westward.

South Georgia is, in our expectation, a natural paradise with huge penguin colonies and sea elephant gatherings. Of course, there is much more to see there, but these two particularly attract us. It was soon decided for us: If it fits into the (three-week Hessian) Christmas holidays, we will do it. Well, for this winter, we actually found a suitable trip that will take us from Ushuaia over the Falkland Islands to South Georgia, from there to the Antarctic Peninsula, and finally back to Ushuaia.

Now - even though we are old Antarctica hands - the excitement is rising. The bags are packed, the batteries charged... it really can't start fast enough. We will report back (as far as internet access allows)...

Since long there was nothing to share here, but now, another trip is approaching: Again, we are heading deep downunder, to visit Antarctica for a second time. We had been absolutely enthusiastic about our tour from Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego) via Ross Sea to New Zealand, but there was a big BUT: On that tour, it was impossible to include South Georgia (as South Georgia is quite a bit east of Ushuaia, but the main travel direction was westward).

In our expectation, South Georgia is an absolute nature's paradise, with huge penguin colonies and sea elephant accumulations. Of course, there will be more on show, but these two attract us most. For us, it was a quick decision: If we find a tour that matches the (3 weeks Hessian) Christmas Holidays, we will go south again and turn the 'once in a lifetime' Antarctica into 'twice in a lifetime.' Luckily enough, we already found a trip that suits our timeframe. We will start again in Ushuaia, visit the Falkland Islands, then South Georgia, and also head down to the Antarctic Peninsula before we have to pass the Drake Passage again to finish off the trip in Ushuaia.

Even though we are so experienced in Antarctica, we are excited and curious about the things to come and see (and photograph, of course). The bags are packed, the batteries charged... and we are eagerly waiting to get on the plane and start. We'll keep you posted (provided some internet coverage is there)...
