The drive from Auckland to Hot Water Beach only took a few hours, so there was plenty of time to do something during the day. That's why we went to Cathedral Cove, a beautiful secluded beach (unfortunately still very crowded). Despite the cold water, we couldn't resist taking a quick dip in the magnificent weather.
Since Hot Water Beach has hot water only at low tide, we went to the beach with a large group around midnight to dig a hole with a spade. Some spots were so hot that you could even burn your feet. However, the perfect mix of cold sea water and hot water created a lot of fun under the clear starry sky.
