Jamaica - Day 12 - Black River, Appleton Estate and more

For day 12, we again got ourselves a driver (Henry) who took us around the whole day as we had a lot on our itinerary.

First, we drove about an hour to Black River. There, we took a boat ride along the Black River and were able to see some alligators. After that, we visited a hatchery where we could see baby crocodiles. All in all, it was pretty cool.

Next, we went to the rum factory 'Appleton Estate'. On the way, we drove through the Bamboo Avenue (several archways made of grown bamboo).

When we arrived at Appleton Estate, we had to wait until enough people were there for a guided tour. But waiting wasn't a problem because we could drink as much rum punch (rum with fruit juice - very tasty) as we wanted.

In a cheerful mood, we joked around and enjoyed the tour. We saw how sugarcane used to be pressed with the help of a donkey, how it is distilled, and where the barrels are stored.

After the tour, there was a rum tasting with many different varieties. Of course, we tried them all. Then we sat down at the bar again for a few free rum punches until the estate closed.

When we arrived back at the hotel, we made ourselves comfortable on the terrace where the hotel owner Rohan surprised us with another bottle of rum and our chef Bertram joined us as well.
