Street Food and other culinary delights

Published: 30.10.2016

Most people know that I could talk about food for hours, so it's no wonder that I went on a culinary adventure in Singapore and Malaysia. Of course, everything was vegetarian, as expected. I got by just fine with my 'no meat, no seafood' diet ;)

Penang's street food is considered one of the highlights, if not the best street food in Malaysia. Everything I tried was definitely delicious, except for one thing. I really indulged in all kinds of things. I could have even started a food blog. I got most of the tips from Peter and Mei, my hosts. They're not vegetarians, but as I said, I managed to find modified versions. Here are the pictures:

Avocado Salad (super delicious)

Vegetarian Satay

The satay skewers and especially the peanut dip were absolutely amazing :)

Vegetarian Laksa
Vegetarian Laksa

Laksa is a Southeast Asian soup made with coconut milk and chili. Laksa is also a national dish of Singapore and Malaysia and typically contains rice noodles, vegetables, fish, and shrimp. Of course, there are numerous variations, but mine is without fish and shrimp. It had all sorts of things in it, but it was very tasty!

A dessert in George Town, another recommendation from Peter and Mei, it's somewhat comparable to Crème brûlée, but even more delicious :)

I was totally surprised to discover that there are red dragon fruits too :)

Breakfast just the way I like it :)

'Matchabian'

A typical combination in Malaysia - Matcha and red beans! It sounds strange, but it was really good!

Ondeh ondeh
Ondeh ondeh

This is one of the traditional kuih in Malaysia (kuih stands for cake/pastry). It's usually made from sweet potato or glutinous rice flour, the green color comes from pandan leaf juice, filled with 'Gula Melaka' or palm sugar (liquid core) and rolled in fresh coconut flakes.

Nyonya
Nyonya kuih/Dessert
These desserts bring together Indonesian, Malay, and Chinese influences. They are often based on coconut milk and infused with juices from various plant leaves (green usually always pandan leaves), sweetened with the aforementioned Gula Melaka (palm sugar).
None of the colors are artificially made. Very interesting desserts :)

I could post more photos, but I think these photos are enough for now :)

None of the items cost more than 2.50 euros, and 2.50 euros was more of the price for the 'Western' dishes! The absolute highlights of the local dishes for me were the Nyonya, the vegetarian satay (mentioned above), and the
