Day 20 TELGRUC-SUR-MER 08/24/2022

Published: 24.08.2022

Today we drove with our Wild Hilde to the vicinity of the westernmost point of the peninsula. Kerdreux was the destination, but we were not allowed in. A parking lot in front of the small village, about 30 houses, was the end. The Breton cottages have a wonderful unique style and are characterized by simple architecture (made of natural stones and mostly blue shutters). What used to be houses for simple farmers are now weekend homes for wealthy French people or converted holiday apartments for tourists! But the small villages are beautiful.

Walking along the coast, sometimes on the beaches for swimming or surfing, was very impressive, as it involves a lot of ups and downs! Very rough stone paths, interrupted by hedge-lined sections that created a different climate, kept alternating constantly. Plus, the constant view of the roaring sea in bright sunshine. Simply amazing, although occasionally tiring! Unlike our Alpine tours, we were never alone! We haven't seen so many hikers in the past few days!! Young and old were on the trail with us and were probably heading for the same destination, 'Cap de la Chevre,' or coming back from there. That's the westernmost point of our Breton peninsula of Crozon. But our tour had already lasted about 7 km at this point. The Cape itself is still a French military base today and our hope for a refreshment/snack point was dashed. We abandoned the plan to walk back to the car on the other side of the coastal path and made our way back to Wild Hilde on the direct land route. Again, wonderful small settlements with a maximum of 30 houses and easier paths to walk on. This should also be emphasized here: we hike on very rough coastal paths that require a lot of concentration. French people and sometimes German tourists like to drive to the vicinity of the prominent coastal points, then walk around with 'little shoes,' take photos, and then leave again! We hike with backpacks and hiking poles on sometimes very demanding paths! The main path branches off very often because the cliffs and abysses attract people! For us, a misstep and falling on the knees would lead to termination. Because after about three hours, I am already feeling my limits. So full concentration and as few detours as possible!

As a map guide, I did everything right today, but ...! Tomorrow I absolutely have to cook a successful meal!? More about that in our next post!?!

Such cliffhangers really encourage further reading, don't they?
