General Information

The Independence of Cartagena is not only the first declaration of absolute independence from the Spanish crown in the New Granada, but also an important date in the long process of National Independence, which occurred on November 11, 1811.

The Independence Festivals embody the living metaphor of independence and are at the same time one of the most crucial heritage expressions of Cartagena, arising as a result of an insurgent political manifestation and the participation of the subaltern sectors of the city.
