Catlins und Te Anau

Published: 21.03.2024

When we arrived in Oamaru we stopped at Scotts Brewing Company. We tried local beers there. We then looked at the Victorian Quarter and drove a few kilometers further south to a campsite.

The next morning we visited the Moeraki Boulders. These are large, spherical boulders that lie on a section of beach.

When we arrived in Dunedin we made a quick stop at Baldwin Street, the steepest street in the world.

We continued into the city center. There we looked at the historic buildings made of the typical sandstone and took a break in a nice café.

We continued south along the Southern Scenic Route, past white beaches and turquoise sea.

We made a stop at Nugget Point Lighthouse and were impressed by the great view.

We then drove to our campsite at Purakanui Bay. We got a front row seat there. The drive through the muddy campsite was a bit adventurous. Our camper is no longer just boring and white 😜

The next morning we continued driving through the Catlins, stopping at some waterfalls and having some ice cream at a nice cafe.

Due to bad weather conditions, our actual destination, the Cathedral Caves, was closed, so we went straight on to Curio Bay.

There we looked at the petrified forest at low tide and looked for penguins - unfortunately without success.

On March 19th we set off early and drove on the Southern Scenic Route to Te Anau. We made stops in Invercargill and several beaches. The drive was very nice, great landscapes and little traffic.

When we arrived in Te Anau, we spontaneously decided on a little adventure and got on a seaplane. From above we had a great view of the fjords, forests and lakes. Our pilot explained a lot about the landscape to us during the flight. We were probably very lucky with the weather and had the best day in a long time. In the distance we could see all the way to Stewart Island.

After this great experience we drove to our campsite (Henry Creek).
