Paradisiacal beaches, mountains, extraordinary attractions, and friendly people - a city that has it all. Rio de Janeiro is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating cities in the world. But what is it really like there, and how many days should you spend there?

Getting there:

You probably have your accommodation at Copacabana or nearby. There are public buses from the airport to there. However, since they are somewhat unreliable, you can also opt for a taxi or an Uber. An Uber is significantly cheaper, and the stand is about a 2-minute walk away.

SIM card:

Buying a SIM card is unfortunately not entirely simple, as a Brazilian ID is required. I was able to buy one at the shopping mall 'Rio Sul', but in my opinion, it was a bit too expensive. Alternatively, you can purchase an e-SIM online.

Getting around:

The cheapest option is to use public transportation (bus and metro). You can also pay there with a credit card. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or Uber (including motorcycles) or rent an e-scooter or bicycle.

Attractions:

Rio de Janeiro has a lot to offer! As soon as you step outside, you are in the thick of it. The city is full of people, and sports are taking place everywhere - jogging on the beach of Copacabana, soccer, or fitness with an ocean view (Academia do Aproador). Brazilians take great care of their bodies.

You definitely have to visit Sugarloaf (Pao de Acucar). You have the opportunity to take the Cable Car from the bottom to the first mountain and then to the second mountain. Alternatively, you can hike up the first mountain, which I did, and I found it very beautiful in terms of nature. From the very top, you have an incredible view of the entire city.

Santa Teresa is a neighborhood in the center of Rio de Janeiro and is definitely worth a trip. Here, you should take the famous tram up the hill and visit the mosaic-covered stairs by Jorge Selarón.

Cristo Redentor is perhaps one of the most famous attractions in Rio de Janeiro. Through the 'Tijuca' National Park, you can hike up to the observation deck, which I did. However, you should be aware that the path is quite demanding, and due to the climate, you should have a certain level of fitness. You should plan about 1.5 - 2 hours for the walk. But it’s worth it! You walk through nature, and the feeling when you reach the top is simply great! Alternatively, you can also take the train up.

If you want to immerse yourself in Brazilian culture and dance with the locals to live Samba music, you should visit Pedra do Sal in the center of Rio de Janeiro.

Crime:

When traveling to Brazil, many people wonder beforehand about the crime situation. Rio de Janeiro is a big city, where it is definitely necessary to be careful and, for instance, carry your backpack in front. Of course, you should also avoid favelas. However, the Brazilian authorities are keen to ensure safety, especially at Copacabana, where there is a strong police presence. I must say that I did not have a single negative experience.

Conclusion:

Rio de Janeiro is a big city, which is why it is really 'busy.' However, the joy of life is palpable and easily contagious! I love this city. It simply has everything to offer. You can go to the beach, you can dive into nature and go hiking, you can go shopping. And you can admire the incredibly beautiful panorama of the city from the viewpoints.
