To the Mecca of surfers ...

Published: 27.10.2022

... Nazaré. Idyllically located on the Atlantic, in winter you can watch monster waves of up to 20m in height with a lot of luck. The bravest surfers in the world meet here to face the challenge. Today's waves were not quite as high, but still mesmerizing and crashing around our legs. What must it feel like when such a huge wave rolls towards you?!?!?! These waves are caused by a canyon in the sea, which is 320m deep in front of Nazaré (2,000m further out) and superimposes the usual forward and backward wave ... great pictures, films and videos can be found on the internet. ;-)

We continue along the coast towards Lisbon. The travel guide recommended the flagship mountain village of Obidos, which is definitely worth a visit. It is really enchanting, especially since it is completely surrounded by a well-restored city wall. Just not on Sundays... As is often the case with "showcase villages", there are peak times that should be avoided. But if you have been living like a retiree for 3 months, you can easily lose track of insignificant details like weekdays. Then it gets crowded. We retreat to the city wall and take a look from above.

Since we have chosen a cozy little farmhouse nearby for tonight, we don't have to drive much further and can make a detour to the surfer town of Peniche. We have never seen so many surfers on, in and under the waves before. The danger doesn't come from the water, but from the surfer next to you ... puhhh.

Oh by the way ... at our little farmhouse we didn't meet anyone, except for a friendly guard dog and about 30 hungry young cats. So we just made ourselves comfortable in front of the gate. The owners arrived home late at night and had to juggle around us a bit. But we didn't reveal ourselves either and left early in the morning. For Lisbon, we will choose a campsite again.
