This morning, after sleeping for almost 12 hours, I looked out the window and the weather god made up for the bad weather in Putre. Bright sunshine with a view of the lake....

The German influence in the area is unmistakable. The first settlers arrived here around 1850, and the German school in Puerto Varas has been around since 1857. Everywhere you encounter German names, and a word or two has been adopted. 'Kuchen' means cake here, and everyone can imagine what 'strudel' is.
The owner of the hostel here is of German descent in the 4th generation. His great-grandfather came here with the other immigrants.... He doesn't speak much German anymore, but he looks like a German. 1.85 m tall, blond, with glasses :-)
