During our tour off the beaten tourist path, we passed by some more remote dream beaches (e.g. Tauranga and Matauri Bay). There were always new and special views of the island...

From the port of Russel, we sailed through the Bay of Islands on the 'Vigilant' with the captain. The ship was about 42 ft long and usually accommodates 10 guests. There were only four of us. We went ashore on a small island and with a short walk, we could reach the other side of the island with the nicer beach. After a small lunch, we sailed back. The wind conditions made it necessary to sail at quite an angle almost the whole time. Sometimes it felt like we were about to slide into the water. We were sitting, but it felt like we were almost vertical. You have to like that...
