Purnululu #2

After focusing on the easily accessible primary attractions in the southern part of the park yesterday, we want to take a slightly longer hike today. The destination is Whipsnake Gorge. We first walk along the Picaninny Creek (a dried-up riverbed) before turning towards 'The Window' into Whipsnake Gorge.

Due to the heavy rains, we had the luck to experience Cathedral Gorge with water yesterday. This is quite rare during the dry season. For the same reason, there is now water in Picaninny Creek and Whipsnake Gorge. At first, we try to avoid the water and squeeze along rock walls or sneak through thorny bushes. But soon we realize that, in the long run, there is no way to avoid the water. When we return to the parking lot after nearly 6 hours (for 10 km, including extensive breaks), we have spent nearly an hour with our feet in the water.

However, this did not dampen the fun in any way, as the rock formations here are simply stunning. And you get a first impression of how expansive this landscape form is.

Our excitement from the first day carries us through the entire second day. It is only when the sun sinks behind the beehives at the hiking parking lot that we can part with this wonderful place.

Note: Most of the restrictions caused by the rains have now dissolved, allowing us to continue our desired route largely unchanged.
