Rawnsley Bluff & Wilpena Lookout

Published: 13.04.2019

As we wake up this morning, the sunrise is just beginning to announce itself in bright red colors. And just before 7 o'clock we're already at the hiking parking lot for Rawnsley Bluff. When we start walking, it's only 10 degrees, but we quickly warm up while walking. The path to the Bluff (rock promontory) is very diverse. First, we walk relatively flat through the characteristic bushland of this region. Here on the elevated path, we still see some kangaroos and on the descent an echidna (oversized hedgehog). Then comes a very steep and rocky section, where we sometimes have to crawl on all fours. The last part is flat again along a ridge. Here we enjoy great views of the ranges in the surrounding area. We sit at the Bluff for about 90 minutes, have breakfast, and enjoy the tranquility. Unfortunately, it's not clear, the sun only comes out occasionally. That's why the mountains look rather smooth and dark. The temperatures are optimal, warm, but below the sweat threshold.

After about six and a half hours, we're back down and have a cup of coffee before we head to the Wilpena Pound Resort, which is the center of the Flinders Ranges National Park. At the visitor center there, we prepare everything for the next few days. At the very beautiful campground, with its wonderful trees, numerous kangaroos, and some emus, we wash a few clothes for the last time.

Right now, we're enjoying our evening tea and looking forward to tomorrow.
