The first section of the road runs mostly alongside the military training ground. This is where the Arizona feeling solidifies. In Whyalla, a less attractive city dominated by the steel industry, we fill up our fresh water tank. From there, we continue to Cowell. Taking a walk reveals the rugged charm of the small town. It's neither photogenic nor particularly interesting, but it has something that makes it authentic.
From here, we follow the Tourist Drive towards Port Gibbon. It passes by numerous small (<4 parking spaces), coastal campgrounds. However, they are not particularly attractive at the moment, mainly due to the large amount of seaweed on the beach. And the unpleasantly strong winds add to the uncomfortable touch. Port Gibbon is also not inviting, although the red cliffs on which the village perches probably look quite nice at the right time of day.
Arno Bay appears much friendlier to us. Here, we also find a café with good cappuccino. And you can even enjoy it in the sun, protected from the wind.
In the early evening, we end up at Lipson Cove. We set up our campsite above the very beautiful bay. A walk along the bay completes the day. While the setting sun turns the sky into a sea of flames, we observe huge flocks of birds that seem to come out of nowhere and disappear into nothingness. This is the first place on the eastern coast of the Eyre Peninsula that I would recommend.
