Fremantle / Rottnest Island

Published: 17.02.2017

The next day started with pure sunshine and a workout - diligent as we are. Then we went to Fremantle - a suburb of Perth that we chose for our beach days. Unfortunately, on the first day, we didn't make it to the beach because we wasted our time at the shopping center. But on the next day, we went straight to the beach! It was also our first day to use our new beach towels.

We saw them on the first day in Brisbane and fell in love with them, but we could only buy them at the end of our trip in Perth due to our luggage problems and the many flights. The beach visit was a bit different because it's the first time that there are warnings about "jellyfish" and sharks. That's why it's better to choose a spot at the beach near the so-called "shark nets" to protect yourself from the sharks. However, the risk of jellyfish (which can be very painful to touch) still exists, so swimming in the sea wasn't really relaxing. In the afternoon, we took a little trip to the city and visited a weekend market.

I really enjoyed the markets here, somehow there is always something special to find. After that, we went to the beach again before we had dinner and drinks at "Little Creature" in the evening. It's a brewery right by the water that was recommended to us by some people. It was nice, but in our opinion, it was a bit overrated.

Now that summer has finally returned to Australia and we easily exceed the 35°C mark again, it's time for extensive beach visits - after all, we want to return to Germany with a nice tan. So, we spent the whole Saturday at the beach in Fremantle. On Sunday, we went to Rottnest Island, a small island 25 minutes ferry ride from Perth.

On the island, you can only get around on foot or by bike, and we chose to explore it by bike. We booked a night on the island in advance, and it was really the first time after 4 months that we had a touch of luxury.

The hotel on Rottnest Island was really beautiful and finally met European standards - and it was also affordable! You don't really get that here otherwise. The first thing that awaited us on the island was Jozy's skydiving flight. The crazy girl decided to jump out of a plane at an altitude of 4000 km... well, if you have nothing better to do. I felt just as sick about it as if I were about to do it myself, and I was very, very happy when she came back safe and sound. After that, we explored the island by bike and went to the beach. There are about 12,000 quokkas on the whole island, so a quokka selfie was a must.

We really felt like we were in paradise and it was like having it all to ourselves. It was really nice that a tourist destination wasn't overcrowded and we had the dream beaches all to ourselves.

The next morning started with a great buffet breakfast, and because we liked it so much, we spontaneously extended our visit to the island by one night.

The 3 days on the dream island were so beautiful that it's really starting to be difficult to say goodbye to Australia. Because the weather has made an effort in the last few days, we can't really imagine that we'll soon be back in cold Germany.
