On the way to Bloemfontain, we drive straight ahead for 400km from Cradock, with nothing around us. Cradock was not yet 'the middle of nowhere'. We were a bit premature. It is also difficult to find a suitable place for a break. When we think we discover a city, it turns out to be a small place where we stock up on packed cheese, cookies, and tuna sandwiches at the only Spar supermarket. But we continue driving directly, as this town also raises safety concerns for us. Back on the highway, we stop at a bay with a picnic area and hungrily devour our purchases while the trucks zoom past us at 120km/h. It's not exactly romantic... But we're lucky. As soon as we get back in the car, it starts pouring heavily.
